Our Heritage Stage is developed to help you dive head first into the Irish culture. Speak Gaelic, try to ceili dance, or learn how to play an instrument, just like in the fiddle workshop pictured above.  Schedules coming soon!

Friday, September 2

Heritage Stage
6:00 – 6:45 p.m. Fiddle Workshop
Colin Grant from the Colin Grant Band will demonstrate his fiddle skills and provide tips and techniques on a variety of new and traditional fiddle styles.
7:00 – 7:45 p.m. Hurling & Gaelic Football Workshop
Learn the history of these ancient sports, their role in Irish mythology and how the modern Gaelic Games came to be played in Kansas City. Take a camán in hand or try to solo a Gaelic football in this hands-on workshop led by members of the Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club.

Saturday, September 3

Noon – 12:45 p.m. Hurling & Gaelic Football
Learn the history of these ancient sports, their role in Irish mythology and how the modern Gaelic Games came to be played in Kansas City. Take a camán in hand or try to solo a Gaelic football in this hands-on workshop led by members of the Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club.
1:00 – 1:45 p.m. Bodhran Workshop
What is an Irish Fest without a bodhrán workshop? Bodhrán enthusiasts will not want to miss All-Ireland Champion Colm Phelan from the band Goitse provide tips and techniques on this popular Irish drum.
2:00 – 2:45 p.m. History of Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Since the early 1870’s, the Kansas City St. Pat’s Parade has solidified the local Irish community, and sometimes irked the others with its religious overtones and occasional boisterous revelry. Pat O’Neill and parade organizers will tell the stories behind the stories of this popular annual event.

Did you know you can enjoy Irish workshops year round? The mission of The Irish Center is to celebrate, support, preserve and promote Irish heritage and culture. Join Executive Director Nancy Wormington as she discusses programs, classes and activities.
4:00 – 4:45 p.m. Traveling Ireland with Kids
Make the most of your trip to Ireland with family travel authority Jody Halsted. Learn how to prepare for the trip, what to see, what to skip and why Ireland is the most magical family destination.
5:00 – 5:45 p.m. Irish Language Workshop
Learn Irish in less than an hour – no blarney! Irish language essentials taught through the medium of managing your loved ones (children, pets, spouses, etc). We’ll romp through an Ghaeilge’s pronunciation, grammar and unique characteristics whilst scolding, entreating and whispering sweet nothings. Taught by Renata Rua, the Irish Center’s Specialist and Kansas City’s own Irish language teacher.
6:00-6:45 p.m. Meet and Greet - Gaelic Storm
How did they get their start? What is it like on tour? Come listen and ask questions of Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger.
7:15-9:00 p.m. Cili Workshop
A Ceili is a traditional Gaelic social dance. The Colin Grant Band will provide the music and instruction. No previous experience is required to participate. All ages welcome.

9:30-12:30 p.m. 115th All-Ireland Hurling Championship
Back by popular demand….don’t miss the finals of the 115th All-Ireland Hurling Championship. Game will be shown live on the Heritage stage flat screen TV.
1:00 – 1:45 p.m. Uilleann Pipe Workshop
Belfast native Francis McPeake comes from a long family history (4 generations) of uilleann pipe players. You won’t want to miss this workshop as he discusses and demonstrates various piping techniques and tunes.
2:00 – 2:45 p.m. Music of Ireland
From Sligo to the Ring of Kerry and from Galway Bay to Dublin, Dave Marsh from Ellis Island, presents various musical styles from the Emerald Isle. He uses many instruments, including the accordion, penny whistle, Northumbrian pipes and bodhrán (Irish drum), to perform jigs, reels, rebel songs, and sing-a-longs.
3:00 – 3:45 p.m. Tracing Your Irish Roots
Researching the story of your ancestors can bring a richer understanding of your Irish heritage. Barbara Scanlon, National Genealogical Society member, will teach you how to get started, search and explore records, and resources you can use.
4:00 – 4:45 p.m. Beer Brewing Workshop
How do they make those hearty stouts? Learn the history of the different styles and get recipes to brew your own beer. Taught by our friends at Bacchus & Barleycorn.
5:00 – 5:45 p.m. Banjo Workshop
Join the fun with multi-instrumentalist Darren McMullen from the Colin Grant Band as he picks his way through the finer points of playing the tenor banjo.
6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Ceili
A Ceili is a traditional Gaelic social dance. The Colin Grant Band will provide the music and instruction. No previous experience is required to participate. All ages welcome.
